MILFORD TRACK: THE FINEST WALK IN THE WORLD (AND IT KNOWS IT)
53.5 km through Fiordland National Park. Rainforest, waterfalls, Mackinnon Pass at 1,154 m, and a boat ride into Milford Sound at the finish. Permits are capped, which keeps it intimate. The title "finest walk in the world" was given in 1908. It still holds.
The Walk
4 days
Day 1: Lake Te Anau to Clinton Hut — gentle river valley, setting the pace. Day 2: Clinton Hut to Mintaro Hut — deeper into rainforest and river. Day 3: Mintaro to Dumpling Hut — Mackinnon Pass. The highlight. Earn it. Day 4: Dumpling Hut to Sandfly Point — waterfalls, then the boat.
Best for:
Walkers who want the signature New Zealand experience, couples, small groups
Planner’s edge:
Guided walks (lodge stays, meals, naturalist guides) vs. independent (DOC huts, self-catering) — we recommend based on your style and book 6–12 months ahead.
