ATACAMA: THE DRIEST DESERT ON EARTH, AND CLEAREST SKY ABOVE IT

Atacama is a landscape that doesn't look like earth: salt flats, geysers at 4,500 m, flamingo-dotted lagoons, and a night sky that makes astronomers emotional. It's also genuinely remote, which means logistics matter and acclimatisation isn't optional.

Valle de la Luna + Salar de Atacama

2-3 days

Valle de la Luna at sunset: the light on the salt formations and eroded canyons is genuinely otherworldly. Salar de Atacama and the altiplanic lagoons — Laguna Miscanti, Laguna Chaxa — for flamingos at elevation and a silence that's almost physical. These are the core Atacama experiences, and they're worth the full time.

Best for:
Photographers, nature seekers, adventurous couples, those visiting Chile for the first time

Planner’s edge:
We sequence the first two days for gentle acclimatisation — the altitude hits differently at 2,400 m in San Pedro de Atacama, and day three is only rewarding if days one and two were planned correctly.

El Tatio Geysers

Half-day (4 AM departure)

The geyser field sits at 4,500 m and is best at dawn, when the steam columns are at their most dramatic against the cold air. The 4:00 AM departure is non-negotiable. Worth it completely — if your acclimatisation is handled.

Best for:
Those 3+ days into the Atacama who have acclimatised, active morning travellers

Planner’s edge:
We only include El Tatio after the first two days of gentle altitude exposure — arriving at 4,500 m on day one is the most common Atacama mistake.

Stargazing

1–2 evenings

The Atacama has less atmospheric interference than almost anywhere on earth, and the Milky Way is visible with the naked eye on a clear night. Observatory tours run from San Pedro de Atacama; the best ones include telescope access and a guide who explains what you're seeing.

Best for:
Stargazers, photographers, those wanting something genuinely unlike anywhere else

Planner’s edge:
We book the smaller observatories rather than the large commercial tours — the experience is more personal and the telescopes are better.
