K'GARI (FRASER ISLAND): WILD BEACHES, CLEAR LAKES, AND A PLAN THAT RESPECTS THE TIDES
K'gari is a place of big landscapes and simple pleasures: salt air, freshwater swims, and long stretches of beach that feel like the edge of the world. It also rewards good planning, because tides, tracks, and permits are not optional.
Southern Lakes & Beaches
1-2 days
Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) is the centrepiece — impossibly clear fresh water over white silica sand. Lake Wabby and Eli Creek complete the southern sweep. 75 Mile Beach is the highway: driving it at low tide is exhilarating.
Best for:
Photographers, families, beach and nature
seekers
Planner’s edge:
Tide windows dictate the beach drive — we advise on exact timing so the sand highway is passable and the experience is safe.

Rainforest & Eastern Beach
1-2 days
The Pile Valley rainforest trail, the Champagne Pools rock formations, and the Maheno shipwreck. The contrast between the interior forest and the exposed eastern beach is what makes K'gari feel complete.
Best for:
Active walkers, families with older kids, those wanting the full island picture
Planner’s edge:
We advise on 4WD setup, permit requirements, and the campsite-vs-lodge decision — the logistics are the planning problem; the island itself is straightforward.
Whale Watching
Seasonal — June to November
Humpbacks migrate along the eastern coast of K'gari between June and November. Viewing from the beach is possible; guided boat tours give better access.
Best for:
Wildlife travellers, families, those timing a visit for
the migration
Planner’s edge:
We time K'gari visits around the migration window for clients who want both the island and the whales — the overlap season is June and October.
