AZORES: VOLCANIC GREEN, MID-ATLANTIC SOLITUDE, AND ZERO PRETENSE
Nine volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic, with crater lakes, hot springs, whale watching, and hiking trails that feel like another planet. The Azores are Portugal's best-kept secret — still refreshingly uncommercialized.
São Miguel
3-5 days
The main island and the right place to start. Sete Cidades — twin crater lakes, one green, one blue — is the defining image. Furnas hot springs for the thermal pools and the cozido das Furnas (stew cooked underground in geothermal vents). Tea plantations at Gorreana: the only ones in Europe.
Best for:
First-time Azores visitors, nature seekers, food travellers
Planner’s edge:
We build São Miguel as a full 4-day chapter — the island has more depth than most visitors use.

Pico + Faial
3-4 days
Pico for whale watching (sperm whales year-round, blue whales in season), the volcanic summit hike (2,351 m, the highest point in Portugal), and UNESCO-listed vineyards grown in black lava soil. Faial for the Capelinhos volcanic landscape — a moonscape added to the island by a 1957 eruption.
Best for:
Active travellers, whale watchers, photographers, serious hikers
Planner’s edge:
The inter-island ferry between Pico and Faial runs frequently — we plan these two together as a natural pairing.
Island-Hopping
10-14 days
São Miguel as the base, then Pico + Faial, with Flores or Corvo for genuine remoteness. Inter-island flights are the reliable option; the ferry network works for shorter hops. The Azores reward more time — each island has a distinct character.
Best for:
Those with 10+ days, travellers wanting something genuinely off the beaten path
Planner’s edge:
Inter-island logistics matter — flights are weather-dependent and schedules are limited. We plan the sequence and build in buffer days so a weather delay doesn't unravel the trip.
